Maybe it’s because I’m a woman, but the selfie posts on my Instagram get the MOST likes. And I don’t like taking them. Never have. My feed is mostly Not My Face. But I’m a comedian who should probably put my face out there MORE. The curse of the entertainment industry. I don’t like the way it feels when I post more than one selfie in a short time, because I associate most selfies with insecurity and seeking validation. I’ve dubbed the social media over-share phenomenon #ValidationNation.
I, too, often fall victim to seeing a beautiful sunset and my first instinct is to snap a picture of it instead of to enjoy it. I MUST SHARE THIS OR IT ISN’T REAL! HOW WILL PEOPLE KNOW I APPRECIATE AND EXPERIENCE BEAUTY AND TRANQUILITY UNLESS I SHOW AND TELL THEM?! Why am I caring about that in the first place? Social media has made us such different people. It’s a challenge to learn how to use it for its advantages without losing ourselves in its confidence and soul destroying capabilities. The good fight continues!
